The last month was a whirlwind of shift and change! I officially opened the doors of Empowered Life, LLC on my 33rd birthday which took place on June 3rd! Three is my lucky number, so I take it as a positive omen for success. After nine years of working for large organizations, I decided I was full up on training and experience in that arena, and I was ready to embark on a new adventure! Ready to take my trauma expertise to a new population and discover how to run my own practice.
I’ve been super grateful to find the world of private counselors in Columbia, Missouri are amazing, welcoming people. It didn’t take long to convince me this is where I belong as a therapist. I can hear my heart song louder than before (woohoo!). I’m secretly loving the idea of being a “newbie” again. It feels like it comes with built in permission to learn, grow, and not know everything. I’m taking it as an opportunity to breathe and relax for a minute…and enjoy this lovely city of Columbia during times when I would otherwise be locked away in an office.
Don’t get me wrong, there was a LOT of intense learning and expansion before this well earned period of rest. I felt a bit like an energetic flash fire, rapidly expanding and then suddenly contracting to begin finding my footing and laying roots in this new spot. I tend to operate like that, front load my work so I can coast on the raft I’ve crafted. The coasting part is great, but depending on the size of my initial expectations, it can be an extremely stressful time fulfilling my own desires.
The greatest gift thus far has been the proof of my social connectedness. Before I launched out on my own, I never fully realized just how supported I truly am. Part of the reason I became a trauma therapist is because I am a survivor of Complex PTSD myself. Despite all my work and continued efforts to heal, one of the lingering symptoms is a nagging sense of unworthiness. No matter how many people tell me they love me, it is sometimes difficult to “own” and embody that love.
This career shift has enabled me to experience love beyond words. Many of my friends and colleagues have reached out with helping hands and generous referrals to express their love and support in a way I had yet to experience. Now that I’m here, I can’t wait to go deeper with my individual clients and to see where this journey will take me deeper within parts of myself. Cheers to the never-ending road of expansion!
